CHOC Chief Legal Officer Jay Gabriel likes to keep a low profile. It goes with the territory of being CHOC’s top attorney.
In the heavily regulated healthcare industry, Jay provides strategic direction and leadership for all legal services for CHOC’s healthcare system and specifically advises the boards of directors, chief executive officer and executive management team on legal matters related to general healthcare, corporate governance, research, real estate, regulatory compliance, information technology, labor and employment, litigation, debt financings, and risk management issues.
As a transactional attorney, he works on business deals, contracts, and governance.
“I enjoy trying to find creative and compliant solutions to issues,” says Jay, whose department totals eight associates in the legal department and eight associates in compliance, internal audit and enterprise risk management.
Jay was CHOC’s first in-house lawyer when he was hired in May 2008 to build from scratch its legal and compliance departments. He calls that effort his proudest accomplishment in his 15 years here.
Academic excellence
Jay grew up in San Bernardino.
He graduated summa cum laude from Yale University with a bachelor of arts degree in American Studies and was elected to the Phi Beta Kappa Society.
Jay attended the Stanford Graduate School of Business where he received his MBA. He simultaneously attended Stanford Law School, where he received his Jurisprudence Doctorate (JD) degree.
Prior to joining CHOC, Jay was the California regional counsel of Providence Health & Services in Torrance. His duties included providing legal services to Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center, Providence Holy Cross Medical Center, Little Company of Mary Hospital and Little Company of Mary San Pedro Hospital.
Previously, Jay was general counsel for Little Company of Mary Health Services.
He also worked at several prominent law firms, including O’Melveny & Myers; Allen, Matkins, Leck, Gamble & Mallory; and McCutchen, Doyle, Brown & Enersen, LLP (now Morgan Lewis, LLP), where he focused on healthcare and transactional law.
Outside of work, Jay loves to ski. He is married and has a daughter in high school and a son in middle school.
