Welcome to Defender Profiles. Here you’ll learn about one of our amazing defenders of childhood – everything from what they do for Rady Children’s Health Orange County (Rady Children’s) to what they do for fun – and gain insight into a different department in our health system.
Elijah embarked on a journey of service from an early age, joining the Marines at just 18. Now, he plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety and security at Rady Children’s as a field officer trainer in the security & loss prevention department. His dedication was recently recognized with the International Association of Healthcare Safety & Security (IAHSS) Officer of the Year Award, a testament to his exceptional service.
How long have you worked at Rady Children’s?
I have been part of the organization for two years.
Can you describe your current role?
As a field officer trainer, I am responsible for training all Allied security officers contracted with our organization. My duties include patrolling the hospital and our various off-site clinics, such as the Southwest Tower, the Centrum North building and the Commerce building. Additionally, I manage escorting patients throughout the hospital, securing the facility from any trespassers and responding to all codes called within the hospital.
What do you love about your current role?
That every day is different. It keeps the job exciting, and I particularly love the adrenaline rush that some days bring. It’s a role that requires empathy, vigilance and a commitment to the well-being of our community.
What do you love about working at Rady Children’s?
I love the team I work with. We’re a close group of coworkers who hang out all the time, even outside of work. We support each other both professionally and personally, which creates a positive and collaborative environment. The sense of community here is truly amazing, and it makes coming to work every day something I look forward to.
What do you wish associates knew about the security and loss prevention department?
Our team is dedicated to ensuring that every visitor, patient, family and staff member feels secure and protected. We’re often the first to respond in emergencies, and our training prepares us to manage a wide range of situations with composure and efficiency. Additionally, our collaborative efforts with other departments help maintain seamless operations throughout the organization.
Recently, you were awarded the Officer of the Year Award at the International Association of Healthcare Safety & Security (IAHSS) Southern California banquet. What does this award mean to you?
I was surprised to receive the award, as I was simply doing my job. When a mother arrived at our hospital driveway in a panic, holding her seizing child, I did what any of my colleagues would do. I immediately took the child and rushed her to the Julia and George Argyros Emergency Department for triage.
What do you think makes someone a great Defender of Childhood?
Showing up every day, knowing that anything could happen in our line of work.
What are your hobbies and interests outside of work?
I enjoy playing video games and watching movies like The Lord of the Rings.
What is one thing on your bucket list?
To travel to Scotland.
