Now in its fourth year, the luncheon featured an inspiring keynote from pioneering ballerina Misty Copeland
COSTA MESA, Calif. (Oct. 8, 2026) — The fourth annual CHOC Let’s Talk: Mental Health Luncheon, presented by Mrs. Cari Peets and Family, raised $1.38 million to support mental health services and programs at Rady Children’s Health Orange County (Rady Children’s), formerly CHOC. The event was held at the Westin South Coast Plaza and brought together community leaders, philanthropists, pediatric mental health clinicians, and advocates to advance care, education, and research addressing the pediatric mental health crisis.
Chaired by Stephanie Angelos, the luncheon explored how anxiety, stress, and
performance pressures affect young people and highlighted the importance of
resilience, mentorship, and emotional well-being.
Emmy Award-winning AMS meteorologist and KTLA 5 Morning News sportscaster Henry DiCarlo moderated the program, which featured an inspiring keynote from Misty Copeland, pioneering ballet dancer, New York Times best-selling author, founder of the Misty Copeland Foundation, and the first African American woman promoted to principal dancer in the history of American Ballet Theatre.
Drawing on her personal journey and experiences in the public eye, Copeland spoke about overcoming adversity, navigating pressure, and the transformative power of mentorship. Through her advocacy and philanthropic work, she continues to champion opportunities that help children build confidence, self-esteem, and emotional well-being.
“Access to pediatric mental healthcare remains one of the greatest challenges facing families in our community,” said Kim Milstien, EVP and Regional President – Orange County, Rady Children’s Health. “Funds raised through the luncheon support Rady Children’s comprehensive pediatric mental health initiatives, including clinical care, prevention and early intervention programs, education, and research. These investments help expand access to care, strengthen community resources, and improve outcomes for children and adolescents facing mental health challenges.”
In addition to Copeland, Rady Children’s clinicians shared their expertise with attendees during a panel moderated by Pediatric Psychologist Dr. Ava Casados. The panel featured Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist Dr. Rebecca Ba’Gah, Psychosocial Supervisor Gabriela Hernandez, Nurse Manager Jess Phan, and Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist Dr. Lavanya Wusirika.
“Being a kid today isn’t easy,” said Jessica Miley, Senior Vice President and Chief Development Officer of the CHOC Foundation. “But together, we can set the stage for future breakthroughs and reach every family and care for their unique needs.”
Event committee members included Stephanie Angelos, Anne Oliver, Adrienne Matros, Psy.D., Caroline Marchant, Christine Wang, Dick Hamparsumian, Gemma Cooper, Jackie Schenquerman, Lanän Clark, Monica Furman, Niloofar Fakhimi, Regina Oswald, and Sarah J. McElroy.
Lead sponsors included Mrs. Cari Peets and Family, the Stephen G. and Regina Oswald Foundation, and the Brunson Foundation. Their support expands access to mental health care, reduces stigma, and strengthens community resources.
