The Hospital Association of Southern California (HASC) has named Jaime Serna, patient engagement coach and educator for Rady Children’s Hospital Orange County (Rady Children’s), as one of this year’s My SoCal Hospital Heroes. The annual awards program honors extraordinary healthcare professionals whose compassion, dedication, and humanity profoundly impact patients and their families. This year’s honorees were celebrated for embodying the true spirit of healing and community service that defines the region’s healthcare workforce.
Jaime’s story exemplifies that spirit. His journey as a hospital hero began in the phlebotomy department, where he met Jojo, a young patient with a complex metabolic condition. Determined to ease Jojo’s fear of countless blood draws, Jaime used his love of magic to transform anxious moments into experiences filled with wonder and laughter. The two developed a deep friendship rooted in trust and joy.
When Jojo’s condition worsened, Jaime continued to visit. He brought light, comfort, and one last magic show during Jojo’s final days. After Jojo’s passing, his family asked Jaime to speak at his funeral, a deeply personal honor that spoke volumes about his impact.
In his current role as patient engagement coach and educator, Jaime mentors others in the art of connection, helping team members foster empathy, understanding, and presence in every patient interaction. His work reminds colleagues and families alike that compassion is a powerful form of medicine.
“Jaime represents the very best of our organization,” says Melanie Patterson, DNP, MHA, RN, vice president, patient care services and chief nursing officer, Rady Children’s. “His kindness, creativity, and commitment to making every child feel seen, heard and valued are what make him a true hospital hero.”
