Renowned neurologist and research scientist Dr. Terence Sanger, vice president for research and chief scientific officer at CHOC, part of Rady Children’s Health, has been elected as a new member of the American Pediatric Society (APS), the first and most prestigious academic pediatric organization in North America.
Founded in 1888 and now with nearly 1,800 members, the APS is dedicated to the advancement of child health through the promotion of pediatric research, recognition of achievement and cultivation of excellence through advocacy, scholarship, education, and leadership development.
Members of APS are academic leaders in pediatrics, and they continue to contribute to the overall progress of child health while inspiring the next generation of child health professionals.
Dr. Sanger joins other pediatricians at CHOC who are members of the APS, including Dr. Coleen Cunningham, vice president and pediatrician-in-chief; Dr. Sandip Godambe, senior vice president, medical affairs and chief medical officer; Dr. Terrie Inder, director of the Center for Perinatal and Infant Research; and Dr. John Crawford, medical director of neurology and co-medical director of the CHOC Neuroscience Institute.
Dr. Sanger was among 92 pediatricians elected as new members of the APS for 2026. He and the other new members will be formally recognized at the APS Howland Gala, held during the Pediatric Academic Societies (PAS) 2026 Meeting in Boston, April 24–27.
“Each year, we welcome new members to the American Pediatric Society, and it is always an exciting moment,” said Dr. Stephen R. Daniels, president of APS. “Our new members represent the future of our society — bringing fresh perspectives, energy, and expertise.
“This year’s cohort is especially distinguished and diverse, with national and international leaders in education, advocacy, research, and clinical care,” Dr. Daniels added. “The APS Council looks forward to engaging with these accomplished individuals as we work together to advance our strategic plan and the mission of the APS.”
Current APS members nominate new members by recognizing individuals who have distinguished themselves as child health leaders, teachers, scholars, policymakers, and clinicians.
APS members are eligible to receive the Society’s annual awards, including the APS John Howland Award, and may participate in the APS Howland Visiting Professor program.
